Vermicomposting.
Vermicomposting is a sustainable and natural process of composting organic waste using earthworms. In farming, vermicomposting involves harnessing the natural digestive abilities of certain types of earthworms to break down organic materials into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to improve soil health and fertility.
Vermicomposting relies on a species of earthworms, typically red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) or red earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus), to consume organic waste materials. These worms digest the organic matter and convert it into vermicompost, which is a dark, crumbly, and nutrient-rich material.
Farmers can set up a vermicomposting system using bins or containers filled with bedding material such as shredded newspaper, cardboard, or leaves. The worms are introduced into this bedding along with organic waste materials like kitchen scraps, yard trimmings, and agricultural residues.
